He was offered a place at the University of Dundee to study history, but decided to take a gap year to see if he could make comedy work as a full-time career he officially declined the offer to study after performing at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He attended East Wemyss Primary School and Waid Academy in Anstruther. He moved with his family to Scotland at the age of four, settling in Fife.
